Last week, I photographed Philadelphia Magazine’s 2008 People to Watch Party. Run out and grab a copy of the mag if you haven’t received it yet. The people in there are amazing and the photos are awesome. I love the red backgrounds in the photos.
One of my favorites was Barette Vance. I always love to hear about dancers who have overcome all odds to continue dancing. Read her story, it will make you think twice about whining the next time you stub your toe. I have also had the privilege of photographing her the last two years in Shut Up and Dance. Amazing facility and I would never have guessed she was dancing after an injury. As Richard Rys writes, “When she practiced for the first time after surgery and couldn’t complete the most natural moves, it was like she’d forgotten how to breathe.” I know that feeling from a back injury I had 15 years ago. It was minor compared to her injury but I still had 3 months of physical therapy and retraining.
