A while back, I had the wonderful opportunity to second shoot with Christopher Duggan on Amy and Lauren’s wedding. Amy and Lauren are two beautiful and amazing women that share such love and admiration for each other. You can see how evident their love is for each other in this video from the New York Times. This day was a huge celebration. I have never seen so many smiles and genuine laughing and love for a couple.
As Christopher mentioned in his post, this reading was read during Amy and Lauren’s ceremony. I find that it describes them beautifully.
In 2003, the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, in Goodrich v. Department of Public Health, enabled its state to become the first in the United States to recognize same-sex marriage. In the words of the court:
“Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family. ‘It is an association that promotes a way of life, not causes; a harmony in living, not political faiths; a bilateral loyalty, not commercial or social projects.’ Because it fulfils yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.”
I also loved all the fabulous shoes their bridesmaids wore. Amy and Lauren asked them to wear black dresses and the most fabulous shoes they could find. I have to say these are pretty spectacular.
Now onto what is really important. Amy and Lauren were legally married in Connecticut a few weeks before their New York ceremony. However, this was the big wedding. The time for all their friends and family to come together, acknowledge and celebrate their love.
