After photographing weddings for over 10 years one of the biggest mistakes brides make is not hiring a make-up professional or the wrong one. I understand your friend’s girlfriend needs to practice doing weddings but do you really want her to practice on one of your biggest photographed days of the year? Do you think celebrities do their own make-up before they go to the Oscars where every camera known to man is there snapping pics? This is the day that you will feel like you are on the red carpet, having your own private paparazzi following you everywhere. There is only so much I can do as a photographer and you are going to spend a lot more time and money having me retouch you in photoshop. Let’s get it right the first time.
So here are some tips from one of my fave experts, Sharon Becker of SB Beauty.
-Use a Pro (see it’s not just me)
Professional make-up artists and hairstylists know how to achieve your look for the camera and make sure it lasts all day. Get referrals from your other vendors, especially your photographer. These people are invested in your happiness, and have had experiences with top artists in town (they also know who runs late, or who’s fun and relaxed).
-Trial Run
Be sure to have your trial at least a month before your wedding for peace of mind. Do your homework! Pick a few celebrities with your coloring and check out her red carpet; create a board for makeup and hair ideas to show to your artists, so you can have a conversation about bridal beauty that is specific. Do not be afraid to try things. Make sure to snap a few images after your session to make sure all elements are a perfect match.
-Beware of Shimmer
Err on the side of caution with sparkly bronzer, deep colors, and shimmer on the eyes or face. It can look streaky and unpolished; It also doesn’t wear well in heat or excitement, and can look flashy, not classic and clean.
-Waterworks
Even if you think you’re not emotional, invest in waterproof mascara, eyeliner, and long-wearing lipstick. Seal all of your makeup with a setting spray, and carry those items for touch-ups on eyes, lip, and concealer.
-Falsies
Even if it seems counter-intuitive, most wedding makeup artists will swear on false eyelashes. Not only do they make your eyes pop, you will hardly even notice that they’re there. Make sure to let your make-up artist know about contacts or allergies you may have.
-To Spray or Not
Airbrushing deletes the natural look of skin, and can look a little more like a mask. However, it can be great for people who have cystic acne, scarring or Rosacea. It can also be hard to touch up tear stains and perspiration. It is best to consult with a professional before going this route.
-Blot
Be sure to have blotting paper with you. This will freshen you up and keep you from looking shiny.
-Vaseline
A great trick is to put some vaseline on your teeth right before formal photos. This helps keep your lips from sticking to your teeth through all the smiling.
-Time
Allow 50% more time for hair and makeup than you originally anticipated on the big day. This will ensure you have plenty of time for all the portraits you want to take before the wedding.
