The Opera Co of Philadelphia performed the East Coast premiere of Tea, a beautiful opera by the grammy award winning composer, Tan Dun. Tan Dun conducted opening weekend. To celebrate his presence and the premiere, the opera held a luncheon and gala. The luncheon was held at the Hyatt at the Bellevue for special subscribers to meet Tan Dun.
Tan Dun is a very talented and fascinating individual. Just listening to him speak and the things he has accomplished are so inspiring. He started a symphony piece on youtube to bring together musicians from all over the world to create a piece with many different types of instruments. Below is a video of him talking about the creation. My favorite quote was when he was talking about the expression and the future of music: using anything, cooking tools, stones, water, paper, anything to share and express your heart, not worrying about the technique but expressing your heart.
It’s like any art form, the most important part is that you are sharing and expressing your heart.
Here is the symphony mash-up.
Here are a few pics from the afternoon too.
