Getting to know me

Hi, I am Sofia! You will usually see me with a camera around my neck and a smile on my face.

I love people, I love capturing people; their movement, emotion, intimacy and energy. I also love to get to know my clients and create photographs that reflects their own unique story.

I approach each event as a clean slate. I watch, anticipate and capture things as they happen. I am like a fly on the wall. Stepping back and capturing each moment is the way that my images are able to tell your story.

I live in New York City but photograph commissions all over. Don’t worry Philly brides, I am still doing weddings in Philly, I just have a little longer commute.

Want to know even more about me?

I had been a dancer my whole life, dancing professionally for 7 years in New York and then touring all over North America and Europe. However, a dancer’s life is short and when it was time to stop, I really searched for something that I could be equally passionate about. I went back to school for theater (but I hated talking onstage) and kinesiology (but I didn’t care enough that my shin bone was connected to my femur bone!) One day my husband said, “What about photography? You get good pictures from the disposable cameras!” Ha ha… yes, I used to just use those paper things you get from CVS. So, I bought a used SLR film camera, a book about photography, and enrolled in a basic B/W photojournalism class. When I processed my first print in the darkroom, I had my “hallelujah moment.” I loved it!

Then, I ventured into the School of Hard Knocks. I called all of my dancer and actor friends and practiced on them. I assisted commercial photographers and worked with wedding photographers. My first wedding assisting job was on the beach and I had to carry a 50lb generator (half my weight) and a huge flight case full of equipment. I think it took me 30 minutes to get 2 blocks in the sand!

Right away, I realized how much I love weddings. I love people. I love watching people and anticipating what is going to happen next. My husband says I am just nosy. Whatever it is, I love being around the energy, the movement and the spontaneous, real moments that happen during a wedding. I love getting to know couples and their families. Capturing a wedding is like dancing… to be a dancer, you must create a picture with every step, interpret the music, feel the other dancer’s energy, anticipate and respond with your own movement and heart. As a photographer, I capture that with my camera: anticipating, feeling and sensing the next moment and creating an image that responds to what is going on around me.

Here is a little video that the fabulous Cinema Cake did for me. It is me photographing Jen and Jeff during their formal session at their wedding.
