Remind yourself that YOU have something to offer to the world!

This is one of my favorite quotes:

“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly. To keep the channel open.” -Martha Graham

Beautiful!

New York Love Affair Winner Announced

Congratulations to Jules and Sachin! Merci New York, NYC Faces and I received so many great entries with beautiful New York love stories, it was very hard to choose. One thing we noticed, many people love New York City maybe even met in New York City and New York City is a large part of their lives but very few are actually getting married in New York. When looking through the entries, Jules and Sachin’s personalities were very evident. The love and respect they have for each other, the way New York is a huge melting pot of people and cultures and how it brought them together, plus their spunky photo endeared them to us. Plus their wedding sounds like so much fun! We are really excited to plan a shoot around their New York Love Affair.

Their friend took this photo as part of their save the dates. They did one word in a different place around NYC and then pasted them together.

Here is part of their story in Jules own words:

My name is Julie Chang and my finance’s name is Sachin Aggarwal. After seeing our last names, you’ve probably already guessed it…Yup, weare “Chindian!” My background is Chinese by way of Atlanta, Georgia and he is Indian by way of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. As you can see,one wrong turn anywhere in our background and we never would’ve crossed paths. So this is one match, we’re sure is meant to be!

We met in NYC six and a half years ago and love living here. We love grabbing a blanket, a bottle of wine and meeting a few friends in Central Park, discovering new coffee shops and restaurants in Nolita, shopping in Soho, enjoying brunch at Little Giant, eating pasta at Eataly, playing tennis at midtown tennis center and scarfing down pizza from Vezzo (we’re big eaters!). NYC has been the set that’s played out our romance and we could not have picked a more beautiful background that captures the cultural unity and open mindedness of our experience.
Sachin and I met as first year investment banking analysts. He was the rockstar former summer intern and I was the newbie they decided to take a chance on. Needless to say, I would turn to Sachin at 2am when my model didn’t balance or my vp would tell me to ask Sachin to explain how to perform the analysis the company requested. He was the perfect analyst…and I hated/admired him for it.

Although I really wanted to hate him, he was just so darn nice and a genuinely good person, I just couldn’t. I decided banking wasn’t for
me and left the analyst program to join a different bank to explore investor relations. I suppose we’d just gotten so used to seeing each
other everyday and hanging out that we found ourselves calling each other and making plans to see each other all the time. We were best friends for a year before we thought about exploring our relationship a bit more.

You see, Sachin is the kind of guy every girl dreams about. He’s kind, generous, strives to always do the right thing and be a good person, he is selfless and sincere and always sees the good in people. We’d been dating for about 2 years when my mom became very ill. We went straight to the hospital and I was an emotional wreck. I’d suspected that Sachin might be the one when we started dating, but my moment of realization came when I woke up on the couch in my mom’s hospital room to see him helping my mom walk up and down the hospital hallway. It touched my heart so much to see how tender and sweet he treated the people I loved.”
Sachin sounds like such a nice guy! Now here’s the proposal:
“We’d been dating for about 3 years when Sachin popped the question. Sachin proposed at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. It was the same ballroom we’d first met in 6 years ago when we were first year analysts at a welcome reception held there. We shared the moment
with our 2 best friends, Jay and Miriam. Jay was the behind the scenes as DJ and photographer and Miriam tricked me - I thought I was going to a nonprofit event with her! The ballroom was empty except for one table in the middle and candles everywhere. On the table was a scrapbook Sachin had made - the story of us. I was already half way through the book when he walked into the room, ring box in hand. I’d already been tearing up a little but when I saw the ring box, I went into full on sobs. We finished reading the scrapbook together and the last page asks, “you may be wondering how this story ends….it ends with a new beginning and one very important question. Julie, will you marry me?” It was the most magical night of my life!”
Love the proposal! So authentic and full of meaning for the two of them. Now some of their wedding ideas.
A true “fusion” wedding, we’ll have two ceremonies (Hindu and American-Christian) at the New York Athletic Club and then cocktails
and reception at the Essex House. Food will be catered by an Indian caterer that does Indian-Chinese food as well. We’ll be wearing
traditional Indian clothing for the Hindu ceremony and then I’ll be wearing a Carolina Herrera dress for the American-Christian ceremony.

The day will start with a “baraat” through central park down to the NYAC. Sachin will be on a horse with Indian drummers and lots of our friends and family dancing and leading the way through the park to the NYAC. Indian weddings are known for their vibrant colors and we’re excited to be incorporating beautiful shades of red and purple. This will definitely be a unique wedding as we combine our cultures and unite our family and friends, sharing both our past and future.

The Importance of Lighting for Weddings

I have been dying to do before and after shots of beautiful rooms and floral designs with and without lighting. Lighting is something most wedding couples feel is a splurge, a non-necessity, a luxury. Well, if you have invested in a gorgeous venue and event design then lighting is essential. If you have “splurged” on your photographs because you realize that is the only thing left for generations to come, then lighting is essential. Photography literally means writing with light. If there is no light, then the object can not be seen. Cameras do not adjust to light like our eyes do. A purple room looks purple in pictures, a dark floral arrangement looks dark in pictures. I have a ton more to say and I think I will bring in an expert to really talk about lighting but check out these 2 photos I took at the Please Touch Museum open house. One has the “standard” lighting provided by the PTM and the added feature of pin spotting. This is where they adjust little lights to add light to the centerpieces and highlight each table. The second has no pin-spotting. Now you can make a more informed decision.

Campbell Studios designed the front two tables, Beautiful Blooms designed the tall arrangement on your left hand side, Lighting by On Q Productions

This one has much more depth. You can see each arrangement on the table. When taking photos, guests will have some residual light silhouetting and adding dimension to their faces.

The room looks beautiful but the tables are lost. It is very flat and the arrangements that you spent a few/several thousands are black. No light for guests mean we have to use our flash to light them which is not so pretty.

Just unbelievable. The room looks spectacular, the decorations are out of extraordinary, just beautiful.

Isaac Mizrahi, Newlywish and Lindsay Landman Events do a holiday table

Right before Christmas, I was asked by New York event designer and good friend, Lindsay Landman and Amanda Allen of Newlywish to come photograph a table they designed for Isaac Mizrahi. Newlywish is an alternative online registry service for chic, sophisticated New York couples. Isaac approached her about designing a holiday table showcasing some of the products available on Newlywish for his weekly webisodes. This shoot was a lot of fun because we did it at Isaac Mizrahi’s studio. His studio is set up for his webisodes, various product photo shoots as well as his QVC show. He had different sections of the space set up like a kitchen, living room, bathroom etc. Really neat to see all the TV lights and then to look through the glass windows and see everyone working in the office. You would never know all those things were in the same space from viewing a photo or watching the TV.

Lindsay Landman found some cool eclectic chairs, a bench and a table from various parts of the studio. She then used a pashmina for a table runner and mismatched plates for the place settings. Each Jason Miller plate from Bobby Berk Home gave a little twist to the homey yet still formal table. She used various pieces from stores like Fish’s Eddy, Bobby Berk Home and Bowery Kitchen: which are all found on Newlywish. My favorite piece of the entire project was the dog painting, Isaac had on one of the walls in the studio. It just adds to the living room feel and works well with all the colors.

You can learn more about the design on Lindsay’s blog and see the webisode here.

I would love to have an eye that could put together a table setting like that!

New York Wedding Photographer at Overbrook Country Club for winter wedding

Pat and Tom had one of the most beautiful and authentic weddings of last year. Pat incorporated everything and everyone she loves into her wedding. When Pat and I met last year she said, I have Beautiful Blooms doing all the design and decor and Eclatante Event Design will plan everything out and keep me sane. Right then I knew this was going to be a great wedding to capture because these two do beautiful work. Then talking more with Pat, I knew by how she was describing Tom and her ideas for the wedding that it was going to be an extremely personal occasion full of love and fun. Pat has 6 kids with 10+ grandchildren. She loves her kids and her one daughter would be her maid of honor, her other children would do readings, the grandchildren would be the ringbearers and flowers girls and sing songs. She emphasized that her family and friends were very important and wanted lots of photos of them. She also LOVED Christmas time and the entire wedding would be a reflection of that.

When I arrived at her house, it was decked out in Christmas gear. I mean, it was gorgeous! It would put some of the New York City holiday windows to shame. She wore a green dress; her favorite color. She wore a white fur stole and carried a white muff with holly.

Her bridesmaids wore iridescent gold and carried wreathes instead of flowers. The grandkids wore all white with gold or silver accents and lanterns. The ceremony was full of love, with her grandson singing, children reading and all the grandkids singing Silent Night.

The decor was festive and reminiscent of Christmas without doing the traditional red and green. Pops of fuschia, teal and purple ran through the room. The tables and centerpieces had snow, holly, snow covered branches, Christmas balls and jewels. Each table was labeled a different Christmas song loved by Pat and Tom.

The reception was a blast. Listening to Tom’s daughter describe how Pat and Tom met was hilarious. Tom and Pat’s daughters encouraged them to join e-harmony and give it at least 3 tries. Pat was Tom’s third date. Had he stopped at the first two ladies he would have never met her. I am so glad he kept trying.

Pat brought all of her girlfriends up and named them honorary bridesmaids. She gave them all crowns, tiaras and sashes. She gave tribute to each one, talking about how much they meant to her and how each of them affected her life.

Her granddaughters dedicated a dance to Pat and Tom

Pat’s favorite movie is Beauty and the Beast, so she had a whole procession of dessert brought out to the song, “Be Our Guest”

Pat and Tom’s siblings did a fun little number for Tom: “Tommy Angel” to the tune of Johnny Angel. His brothers walked across the floor with signs about dating.

Pat and Tom sharing an intimate moment at the end of the night
